Expected results

From knowledge to practical routes for uptake

ORIGIN is designed to generate scientific knowledge, digital tools, biological prototypes, pilot-scale evidence and practical routes to industrial and societal uptake. Results will be published here as they become available and after the consortium has confirmed their accuracy, dissemination level and intellectual-property status.

Protecting biodiversity

Develop fermentation-based alternatives that can reduce pressure on vulnerable botanical species and land-intensive supply chains.

Accelerating biotechnology

Connect AI, biological discovery and automated experimentation to reduce development risk and shorten innovation cycles.

Strengthening European industry

Support more resilient ingredient supply chains, new intellectual property and clearer routes from research to industrial uptake.

Building trust

Combine safety, sustainability, traceability, open science and two-way public dialogue to support responsible innovation.

Expected impact

Environmental, scientific, economic and societal benefits, evaluated against relevant baselines throughout the project.

01

Biodiversity and environment

  • Develop alternatives that can reduce reliance on unsustainable wild harvesting and land-intensive cultivation.
  • Assess project targets of more than 90% lower land use, 30–50% lower greenhouse-gas emissions and at least 70% water savings per kilogram of ingredient against relevant baselines.
  • Apply Safe and Sustainable by Design and Do No Significant Harm principles.
  • Maintain traceability of Digital Sequence Information and support Nagoya Protocol and Access and Benefit-Sharing compliance.
02

Science and technology

  • Connect digital bioprospecting, AI design, metabolic engineering and fermentation in one evidence-driven workflow.
  • Expand access to novel microbial enzymes and biological functions.
  • Improve reproducibility, provenance and interdisciplinary learning through the ORIGIN Co-pilot.
  • Share approved publications, datasets, models and software through Open Science and FAIR practices.
03

Industry and economy

  • Target a reduction in development time from 5–10 years to 2–3 years.
  • De-risk investment through pilot-scale evidence and integrated TEA/LCA, safety and regulatory packages.
  • Support more resilient European supply chains and new intellectual property in industrial biotechnology.
  • Create clearer paths to industrial use, licensing and strategic partnerships.
04

Society and policy

  • Improve public understanding of precision fermentation, AI-enabled biotechnology and sustainable sourcing.
  • Bring citizens, researchers, industry, healthcare professionals, schools and policymakers into two-way dialogue.
  • Produce evidence and policy briefs on agentic AI, self-driving laboratories and precision fermentation for strategic autonomy.
  • Train early-career researchers and contribute to future biotechnology and AI skills development.

Environmental figures are project targets compared with relevant conventional production baselines, to be evaluated through techno-economic and life-cycle assessment. They are not verified results.
